When Jesus Christ, the true Son of God, hung on the tree of His Passion, the Church joined to Christ in the secret mysteries of Heaven… Scivias 2:6
“Although Hildegard von Bingen claimed to be ‘unschooled’, her musical and lyrical expression within the genre of plainchant is singularly unmatched by other composers, male or female. This presentation will discuss the circumstances and influences that shaped Hildegard’s creativity and laid the groundwork for her expansion of the musical form she absorbed in the Benedictine religious community life. In the second half of this presentation, participants will have a short rehearsal to learn a simple piece inspired by Hildegard’s music and words.”
Introduction to KRISTA CORNISH SCOTT
Grammy-nominated Canadian conductor and soprano Krista Scott earned her B.Mus at the University of Regina and her M. Mus in Performance and Literature from the University of Western Ontario, where her studies included contemporary opera and solo repertoire. A past prize-winner at Canada’s national Eckhardt-Gramatté contemporary music competition, she continues to support and seek out new music as a singer, conductor, and as co-artistic director of the contemporary music ensemble Coro Volante. Krista is an active teacher and lecturer on both early and contemporary music, and is a frequent presenter at international conferences in Canada, Europe, and the US. Passionate about introducing young musicians to diverse music, she has lectured on Hildegard von Bingen and women composers of medieval and modern works at the high school and collegiate level. This past season she was invited to lecture for the International Chant Academy and traveled to Portugal to perform and record 17th century polyphony. As a conductor she has guest conducted for Collegium Cincinnati, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains, the YPCC Chorus and Chamber Choir, and most recently is the current guest director for the Mother of Mercy alumna choir. An ardent supporter of women composers, recent commissions include works by Melissa Dunphy, Ellen Harrison, Carlotta Ferrari, and Luna Lab young composer Azalea Twining.
Over her four decades as choral singer, she has sung for renowned Canadian conductors Elmer Iseler, Jon Washburn, and Diane Loomer, and professionally for top American conductors Craig Hella Johnson, Anton Armstrong, Donald Nally, Benedict Sheehan and many others.
